Favorite Things Day 16: Anniversaries

not necessarily in the traditional sense though. Today signifies that I have now lived in the Netherlands for four months. And while this day isn't particularly momentous, I like to recognize the little anniversaries that come and go. I remember the day I arrived in Utrecht perfectly; six inches of snow covered the sleeping city as Luke and I wheeled my suitcases to his apartment, humbled by a beautiful sunrise and two caffeine-deprived minds. Today I especially reflect on how far I've come and the depth of meaning this experience carries, which answers why I'm here.

Favorite Things Day 15: Rentscher Adventure

Its not surprising that one of my favorite things is adventure. I love to travel (even if its across town), be outdoors, and take on new feats. But there is no adventure quite like Rentscher Adventure.

Meet the Rentschers! I wish I had easier access to a scanner, but I kind of like how this photo turned out anyway (and it might save some unwanted embarrassment). This is one of my favorite family photos because I think each person's facial expression and body language really portrays her/his unique personality within the family, which is rare in family portraits and difficult to capture, staged or not. The photograph was taken on a mid-2000 trip to Whistler and Vancouver in British Columbia, upon the completion of our harnessed hike up one of Whistler's many glaciers, which looked something like this:

I'll never forget that hike or that vacation and every time I look at this photograph I am reminded how special they are to me and how much I love adventuring with them.
(and yes, I am the one in the red shorts)

Favorite Things Day 12: Visiting a Friend in Her/His New Home

I just returned from a trip to Brussels in neighboring Belgium to visit my friend Sam and although she has lived there for nearly six months now, this is the first time I managed to make it over there and visit her new home. Regardless of wherever we may be situated or what condition our housing quarters may be in, many of my friends share a common desire to make our space shine and consciously reflect ourselves. When friends move or simply need some change, I love to see the ways they rearrange their spaces.

Brussels is a beautiful and diverse city, but the real treat was being able to witness Sam's adaptation to her 'new life'. Seeing her Brussels bedroom immediately transported me back to her childhood bedroom that it closely resembles (which is impressive because she only brought one suitcase to Europe), which also transported me back to wonderful memories of our friendship and all of the personal growth we've mutually undergone and shared over the years. Walking around Brussels and showing me her favorite places, Sam just glowed. It was so neat to see the many ways in which she has made this experience uniquely meaningful for her.

I don’t have any photos from our trip right now, but I promise them soon! Until then, I love you, Sam and happy birthday :)
